AC Mistakes That Can Make Extreme Heat Even Worse

When Dubai’s temperature climbs past 45°C, small habits like cranking the thermostat low or shutting vents in empty rooms can quietly work against your AC instead of helping it.

Here are the 6 most common AC mistakes during extreme heat, how to fix each one, and a quick checklist to keep your system running at its best all summer.

How Does an Air Conditioner Cool Your Home?

Your AC doesn’t create cold air, it removes heat from indoor air and releases it outside through the condenser unit. That outdoor unit is already working hard against Dubai’s 45°C+ heat, so any mistake that adds extra strain hits harder here than in milder climates, and is more likely to lead to an AC repair sooner than expected.

6 AC Mistakes That Make Extreme Heat Even Worse

1. Setting the Temperature Too Low

Your AC cools at a fixed rate no matter what number you set. Dropping it to 18°C instead of 24°C doesn’t cool faster, it just keeps the compressor running longer under more strain, raising your bill and wearing down your most expensive component.

Fix: Set your thermostat to 24°C in auto mode, the standard recommended by Dubai’s Empower under its “Set and Save at 24°C” campaign. If your home still feels warm at 24°C, the problem is insulation or maintenance, not the setting.

2. Turning the AC Off When You’re Not Home

Switching the AC off while you’re out lets heat and humidity build up in walls, furniture, and flooring. When you return, your AC has to pull that stored heat out of every surface, using more energy than if it had simply maintained a steady temperature all along.

You should only consider turning the AC off entirely when you will be away for an extended period, such as a multi-day trip or vacation, rather than during daily errands.

Fix: Raise the thermostat by 3 to 4 degrees while you’re away, for example to 27–28°C, instead of switching it off completely. A smart thermostat or scheduling feature makes this effortless.

3. Leaving the AC in Auto Mode During Peak Heat

Auto mode reduces compressor output to save energy, which works fine in mild weather. During Dubai’s peak summer, it often can’t keep pace with the heat load, so the AC runs continuously anyway, just at reduced capacity, while your home never quite cools down.

Fix: Save Auto mode for spring and early autumn. Run standard cooling mode from June through September, and manage energy costs through maintenance instead.

4. Neglecting Air Filters

Dust and fine sand are constant in the UAE, and filters clog fast. A dirty filter restricts airflow across the evaporator coil, forcing your AC to run longer and can cut cooling efficiency by up to 15 percent.

Fix: Check and clean filters every 2-4 weeks during summer. It’s the cheapest, most effective thing you can do for your AC’s performance.

5. Blocking or Closing Vents in Unused Rooms

Closing vents to push cooling elsewhere disrupts the airflow balance your system is built around, often leading to uneven cooling and short cycling rather than better cooling where you want it.

Fix: Keep all vents open, even in unused rooms. Close doors instead, or talk to a professional about zoning if you need different temperatures in different spaces.

6. Ignoring the Outdoor Condenser Unit

The outdoor condenser unit releases all the heat your AC absorbs indoors. Sandstorms and dust coat the coil and force the unit to run longer just to keep up, right when outdoor temperatures are at their highest.

Fix: Keep at least 60 centimetres of clear space around the unit, free of furniture or debris, and schedule a professional condenser clean at least twice a year.

Quick Checklist for Peak Performance

  1. Close curtains and blinds during daylight hours to block solar heat gain before it adds to your AC’s workload.
  2. Seal gaps around doors and windows to stop cool air escaping and hot air seeping in.
  3. Avoid running ovens or heat-generating appliances in peak afternoon hours.
  4. Use ceiling fans alongside your AC so you can stay comfortable at a slightly higher thermostat setting.
  5. Book a full AC service before summer, ideally in March or April, to catch issues before peak heat arrives.
  6. Flush AC drain lines every six months to prevent leaks and humidity buildup.
  7. Schedule annual duct inspections to catch blockages early, or book a professional AC duct cleaning if airflow feels weak.

Final Thoughts

Most of these mistakes come from good intentions, trying to cool faster or save energy. Fixing them protects your AC’s lifespan, keeps your DEWA bill in check, and lowers your odds of a breakdown during peak summer.
