How to Deal With a Clogged Kitchen Sink in Dubai?

A clogged drain can bring your day to a halt. While you can always call for professional plumbing services in Dubai, most household clogs are DIY-fixable in under 30 minutes. This guide covers every drain type in your home and gives you the fastest path from clogged to clear.

Why Drains Get Clogged

The cause depends on where the clog is:

  • Kitchen drains: Grease, food particles, coffee grounds, and flour. Cooking oils solidify inside pipes faster than you’d expect once the water cools down.
  • Bathroom sink drains: Toothpaste, soap scum, and hair building up gradually over months.
  • Shower and tub drains: Almost always hair and shampoo residue, packed into a dense plug just below the drain cover.
  • Floor drains: Sand, dirt, and soap residue, especially common in Dubai villas after dusty weather.

Dubai’s hard water adds another layer. Mineral scale builds up on the inside of pipes over time, narrowing them and making every other type of clog worse.

Check These First Before Unclogging Your Drain

  • One slow drain: Local clog, DIY-friendly. Keep reading.
  • Multiple drains slow at the same time: This is a main sewer line issue. Do not attempt DIY. Call a plumber directly.
  • Gurgling sounds from other drains when you run a tap: Early warning of a deeper blockage building up.

How to Unclog a Drain: 6 Methods

1. Hot Water Flush

Best for: fresh grease clogs in kitchen drains

Boil a full kettle and pour it slowly down the drain in two or three stages, waiting about 10 seconds between each. The heat melts grease and soap buildup clinging to pipe walls.

Caution: Do not use boiling water on PVC or plastic pipes. Use very hot tap water instead.

2. Baking Soda and Vinegar

Best for: light organic buildup and drain odour

Pour half a cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by half a cup of white vinegar. Cover the drain to push the reaction downward. Wait 20 minutes, then flush with hot water.

Caution: Do not use this method if you have already poured a chemical cleaner down the drain. The combination can be hazardous.

3. Plunger

Best for: kitchen sinks and bathroom basins

Add enough water to cover the plunger cup. Place it over the drain and plunge firmly 10 to 15 times. For double-basin kitchen sinks, plug the second basin with a wet cloth first. For bathroom sinks, block the small overflow hole near the rim to direct the pressure into the pipe.

4. Drain Snake

Best for: hair clogs in shower and bathroom drains

Feed the flexible cable into the drain while turning the handle clockwise. When you feel resistance, keep turning to break up or hook the clog, then pull it out slowly. Flush with hot water. Drain snakes are available at ACE Hardware and most Carrefour home sections across Dubai.

5: P-Trap Cleaning

Best for: persistent slow kitchen drain after other methods fail

The curved pipe beneath your sink collects debris over time. Place a bucket under it, unscrew the slip-joint nuts at each end by hand, remove the P-trap, and clear it out. Rinse before reattaching.

6. Chemical Drain Cleaner

Best for: stubborn clogs when all else has failed

Available at most supermarkets in the UAE. Follow the label instructions exactly and never mix two brands. Avoid repeated use in older metal pipes, as strong chemicals accelerate corrosion over time.

Preventing Future Clogs

  • Use a drain strainer in every sink and shower to catch debris
  • Never pour cooking oil or grease down the drain and bin it in a container
  • Run hot water for 30 seconds after washing oily dishes
  • Flush drains with baking soda and hot water once a month as maintenance
  • Oils cool and solidify quickly in air-conditioned kitchens, so flush immediately after cooking rather than leaving it

The Bottom Line

Dealing with a clogged drain doesn’t have to ruin your day. By catching blockages early and using these simple DIY methods, you can clear out grease, hair, and sand before they cause major headaches.
