Understanding Your Indoor AC Unit

As fellow Dubai residents, we know we don’t need to go into a lot of detail about the importance of ACs. Our air conditioning units work day and night to fight the heat of the sizzling city and regulate our body temperatures. A clean and well-functioning AC keeps us fresh and happy. Especially, during the peak Dubai summer.

For those looking to understand the marvels of technology and human brilliance that collaborate to deliver this divine machine. Here is your starting point. A basic meet and greet with the unsung heroes of Dubai life.

The air conditioning unit is also known as the AC. Let’s divide the average AC into two halves to simplify our learning. The indoor and outdoor AC. This post will focus on an AC unit’s indoor parts and explain how they work with the outdoor unit to keep our homes cool.

What is the indoor part of an AC?

The average indoor half of a unit is the home-facing part that you see every day. This includes your thermostat, the vents, filters, evaporator coil, indoor motor and ducts. This part, as with the rest of your air conditioner, requires keen maintenance and routine checks.

The indoor component of the AC is the one that expels cool air into your central living space. You can adjust the temperature and the fan speed to your liking through the thermostat.

Now let’s take a closer look at the indoor components of your air conditioner.

Main Indoor Air Conditioning Parts

AC Refrigerant

The refrigerant is the key part of your AC’s cooling process. Fun fact: the whole system is built around the cooling properties of the refrigerant. Its role is to create cool air that gets distributed around your home. Your AC system wouldn’t work without it.

The cooling solution makes its way through your system as different parts work together to keep your home chilled on a warm day. Air conditioning units reach an optimal pressure at which they operate, this may vary depending on unit type.  We recommend figuring out the AC’s limit, to be aware in the case of problems.

Now we move on to the main elements of the indoor cooling system.

AC Filters

The first point about filters is that not all AC units have them, even though they should. Your filter is the final stopper for the dust particles that can build up over time inside your AC. Filters help keep our lungs healthy by clearing the air of these particles and preventing them from entering our bodies.

For uncompromised air quality, your AC filter is the first and most basic step to enact. Not cleaning your AC filters regularly can cause allergens and dust piling up on them. This accomplishes two things. The obvious; better air. The subtle; it helps keep your DEWA bills on the low side by not hindering the airflow.

The AC’s Evaporator Coil

As we mentioned, the indoor and outdoor units of your AC work together as a team to cool your space down. Your indoor evaporator coil connects to the condenser coil in your outdoor air conditioning unit. Together, they work to help the refrigerant absorb heat indoors, and release it outdoors.

By the decree of science and engineering, evaporator coils are made from metals that conduct heat best; steel and copper. The refrigerant transforms from liquid to gas when it reaches the condenser coil. It absorbs heat from your space and transfers it to the condenser coil outside in this form, and repeats this in a cycle.

To ensure the smooth functioning of the evaporator coil, it needs to be kept clean. A grime-filled coil can end up using a higher amount of energy. There’s also the risk of future breakdowns and leaks.

AC Ducts

You might have seen pictures of your AC ducts- the metallic silver tubes that carry cool air into your home. A passage built exclusively for air to travel through, it carries chilled air in our out of our rooms. Two ducts work on that process; one to suction warm air out and another sends the soothing cool air our way.

A poorly maintained duct can harbor sand, dead insects, dust, and even mold. Does anyone in your family suffer from low-level perpetual respiratory conditions? If yes, you should ensure your air conditioner isn’t the cause of it by getting it professionally looked over.

Thermostat

The thermostat enables you to adjust and set your temperature requirements. Some ACs thermostats can also be remotely adjusted. Do you get a small thrill out of playing the ‘let’s save energy’ game by adjusting the temperature in rooms? If not, try it! It helps you pay the attention (you should) to your AC’s functioning.
